Baba Ziauddin Siddique (13 September 1958 – 12 October 2024) was an influential Indian politician from Maharashtra, representing the Bandra West constituency as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for three times in 1999, 2004, and 2009. He served as the Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies and Labour under Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh from 2004 to 2008. Prior to his MLA tenure, Siddique was a Municipal Corporator for two terms from 1992 to 1997.

Before his death, he held prominent positions as Chairperson and Senior Vice President of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee. On February 8, 2024, he resigned from the Indian National Congress and joined the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar shortly after. Tragically, Siddique was shot dead on October 12, 2024, in front of his son Zeeshan’s office, marking a shocking end to his political career.

Political career :

Ziauddin Siddique, popularly known as Baba Siddique, began his political journey as a teenager when he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in 1977. He actively participated in student movements as a member of the National Students Union of India in Mumbai. By 1980, he became the General Secretary of the Bandra Taluka of the Bandra Youth Congress, quickly rising to president within two years. In 1988, he was elected president of the Mumbai Youth Congress.

Siddique entered local government as a Municipal Councilor in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation in 1992, serving two terms. He became an MLA for the Bandra West Assembly Constituency in 1999 and was re-elected in 2004 and 2009, completing three consecutive terms. He also served as Chairman of the MHADA Mumbai Board from 2000 to 2004 and as Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies and Labour from 2004 to 2008. In 2011, he funded the establishment of an Eco-Garden in Bandra-Khar.

Baba Siddique Death :

Baba Siddique was tragically shot on October 12, 2024, by three attackers in Mumbai. The incident occurred around 9:30 PM near the office of his son, Zeeshan, who serves as the MLA for Bandra East. Siddique was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at the age of 66.

Following the shooting, police apprehended two suspects identified as Gurmail Baljit Singh from Haryana and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh. Authorities also named two additional suspects, Shiv Kumar from Uttar Pradesh and Mohammad Zeeshan Akhtar, in connection with the case. The Mumbai Police confirmed that the assassination was orchestrated by a gang led by Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently incarcerated. This shocking incident has raised concerns about political violence and security in the region, leaving Siddique’s family and the community in mourning for a respected political figure.

He was married to Shehzeen Siddique, and they raised two children together: a daughter, Dr. Arshia Siddique, and a son, Zeeshan Siddique. Zeeshan followed in his father’s footsteps and became the MLA for Bandra East.
