Shyam Benegal, a veteran filmmaker, died on Monday at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital. He was ninety years old. Chronic renal disease was the condition for which he had been receiving therapy. Benegal was born in Hyderabad on December 14, 1934, into a family of Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins who spoke Konkani. Early on, Shyam had an interest in cinema because of his father, Sridhar B. Benegal, who was an avid photographer. Using a camera his father had given him, Shyam made his first film when he was twelve years old. The groundwork for his extraordinary cinematic career was laid when he founded the Hyderabad Film Society and later graduated with a Master of Economics from Osmania University in Hyderabad.
Famous films that Benegal directed include Ankur (1973), Sardari Begum (1996), Nishant (1975), Manthan (1976), Bhumika (1977), Mammo (1994), and Zubeidaa (2001). The Indian government honored him with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Shri in 1976.
